Watermelons are a tasty summer treat, perfect for any fresh summer salad or as dessert during your evening barbecues! For an interesting treat- try grilling them (trust me!). However, watermelons taste much better fresh from your garden, with a sweet, sugary taste you simply can’t get from the grocery store. So why not try your hand at watermelons this year?
Watermelons are very easy to grow, which is often to the surprise of growers! They grow quite large, so they should be planted in a spot where they have lots of room to stretch out. They enjoy a rich, fertile soil, so it’s advisable to add in an organic compost or manure enrich the dirt. A high nitrogen fertilizer will also help their growth. Surprisingly, they do not require too much water. They have deep roots. Ensure they get extra water during dry periods, but otherwise, don’t worry if you forget about them. Withhold water as the melons begin to mature, to give them a more intense sweet flavour.
