Description
Tomatoes are some of the most popular garden vegetables to grow, and for good reason! They’re a versatile fruit, with uses in everything from sauces, to salads, to salsa, to sandwiches.
Low acid tomatoes are yellow, small-medium, oval tomatoes. They have a low acidity, making them the perfect slicing or cooking tomato for those on low acid diets. Tomato soups with these will be less acidic, and they’ll generally be easier on the stomach.
Tomatoes are very easy to grow in general, but they can be a bit harder to grow well! Plant tomatoes in full sun, preferably in a spot where tomatoes haven’t been grown in a few years (planting in the same spot year after year can use up the nutrients in the soil). Water directly at the soil, deeply- tomato plants enjoy a good watering, and should be protected from drought. Use organic fertilizers that aren’t high in nitrogen, as high nitrogen can discourage fruit production. Soil with plenty of calcium will help prevent the tomatoes from cracking, as it boosts the strength of cell walls.
