Hens & Chicks have grown in popularity over the years, as one of the few perennial succulents capable of growing outside in our chilly Canadian climate. They grow in the way many succulents do- they spread small rosettes of new succulents (the “chicks”), from the main, large ones (the “hens”). This growth produces an attractive carpet of succulents- something that will be unusual and eye-catching in your garden!
Care is rather easy. They prefer well-drained, dry, sandy soil, and full-sun, so that sunny patch in your garden that scorches any other plant? These will love it! They are highly drought tolerant, and in fact one must be wary of overwatering them. They enjoy our “mild” Torontonian climate, and will go dormant once temperatures drop.
