Oleander is a beautiful, annual shrub that hails from the tropical Gulf Coast of the US. It produces fragrant and numerous flowers, atop a unique, curving woody stem. With palm-like, oblong leaves, this shrub shall surely add a tropical touch to any space- which is especially desirable when a vacation is hard to achieve!
While it is an evergreen perennial in tropical areas, it’s an annual in Toronto. It will grow well in a container, and can then be brought in to overwinter. They are native to dry, rocky soil, so it can tolerate poor soil and some drought. However, it does best in an average soil, with medium moisture and good drainage. They enjoy full sun to part shade, but will bloom most in full sun.
Care should be taken with this plant- all parts can be toxic to humans, pets and children. Be certain to keep children and pets away from your oleander, and wear gloves when handling it to prevent irritation.
